K12 Curriculum Development is the process of creating and improving the curriculum of K—12 courses. K12 curricula can be developed using a variety of approaches. However, most of these approaches have a few elements in common — need and task analysis, design of learning objectives and expected outcomes, selecting appropriate pedagogical methods and assessment tools, authoring and reviewing the content followed by implementation and evaluation.

The process of K12 Curriculum Development is divided into the following important steps — identifying needs, formulating objectives, selecting and structuring content, choosing and organising methodologies, evaluating and reassessing for balance. These steps are explained in greater detail below.
Step 1: Identifying Needs

Step 2: Formulating Objectives

Once the content is selected, it has to be configured sequentially from simple and concrete to complex and abstract while connecting facts, ideas and relationships.
Steps 5 and 6: Choosing and Organising Methodologies
The pedagogy should be chosen to provide what students need to acquire behavioural competencies and learning experiences through listening, observing, reading, writing, analysing and discussion.
Step 7: Evaluating
Evaluation is a continuous diagnostic process of the results of the implementation of the curriculum and its outcomes. This step determines whether the previous steps were properly carried out and the intended objectives were achieved or not.
Step 8: Reassessing for Balance
Apart from checking the curriculum for overall consistency, it is also important to check whether its individual aspects are reflecting the core ideas, provide appropriate learning experiences and outcomes and contribute to the overall progress of the curriculum.
